Overachiever or Perfectionist? These Could Be Signs You’re Gifted
Yes, overachieving and perfectionism are common signs of giftedness in adults. Many gifted people don’t realise it, because they just think of themselves as driven, hard on themselves or never satisfied.
Why gifted people become overachievers and perfectionists
Gifted people often learn early that they’re expected to do well. Praise, high expectations and being told “you could do anything” can turn into a constant pressure to achieve. Their ability to see what a better result looks like also makes “good enough” hard to accept.
Signs you might be a gifted overachiever or perfectionist
- You set very high standards and rarely feel you’ve met them
- You feel flat or restless after succeeding
- You get bored once you’ve mastered something
- You have many interests and struggle to choose one
- You feel things intensely and notice what others miss
- You fear failure and are hard on yourself when you fall short
- Learning came quickly, so you’ve always been expected to excel
You don’t need all of them. One or two may be enough to point to giftedness.
What this means for your career
Gifted overachievers often end up in careers because they were good at them, or because others expected it, not because the work fits. From the outside they look successful. Inside they feel bored, unfulfilled or unsure why nothing satisfies them.
Being good at your job isn’t the same as being in the right job.
FAQs
Is being a perfectionist a sign of being gifted?
Often, yes. Gifted people can see what an excellent result looks like, so “good enough” rarely feels good enough. Perfectionism is one of the most common traits in gifted adults.
Are overachievers gifted?
Many are. Gifted people are often expected to excel from a young age, which can turn into a constant drive to achieve. If the drive comes with boredom, restlessness or feeling flat after succeeding, giftedness may be part of the picture.
Why do I feel unfulfilled even though I’m successful?
Success and fulfilment aren’t the same thing. Gifted adults often choose careers that suit their abilities or meet others’ expectations, not ones that suit who they are. The result can be a good career on paper that doesn’t feel meaningful.
Why do I get bored so quickly at work?
Gifted people learn fast and need real challenge. Once something is mastered, the interest drops. Boredom is often a sign the work isn’t stretching you, not a sign something is wrong with you.
Can a career coach help if I’m gifted?
Yes. I am a career coach who understands giftedness and I can help you find work that fits your strengths, interests and values, instead of a generic career test that treats you like everyone else.
