If you’re feeling lost in life, chances are you are also feeling lost in career.

Work takes up a significant portion of your waking hours, and when it lacks purpose or direction, it can leave you anxious, unmotivated, or even depressed. No matter your age 20s, 30s, 40s or beyond you’re not alone.

It almost always comes down to one thing: never having properly understood who you are, what you value, and where your strengths actually fit. Career counselling gives you that clarity fast, so you can stop guessing and start moving.

Why Do I Feel Lost in my Career?

Feeling stuck can stem from a variety of personal or professional experiences.

Here’s a quick quiz to help identify the root of your confusion:

What is True for you Right Now?

♦ I’ve recently experienced a major life change (eg: had a baby, relationship breakup, loss)
♦ I’ve had or have a new illness
♦  I’ve experienced workplace bullying or a toxic environment
♦ I’m feeling burnout or anxious at work
♦ I have missed out on a promotion
♦ I don’t enjoy my work any more and don’t know what to do next
♦ Will AI take my job, what will happen
♦ I hate Monday mornings and can’t get motivated to go to work

One major source of distress is comparing your career path to those of your peers. Many of my clients share how this comparison makes them feel even more lost. This kind of thinking can lead to increased dissatisfaction and self-doubt.

Regardless of the cause, common feelings include isolation, self-doubt, a loss of confidence, and uncertainty about the future. Even high achievers struggle with this. Elite athletes like Grant Hackett and Dan Vickerman have spoken in the past openly about losing their sense of purpose after retiring from professional sports.

Programs like SBS Insight and ABC’s Four Corners After the Game have highlighted how even the most accomplished individuals can face feeling lost in career when career development isn’t properly considered beyond a single life stage.

The Root Cause: Lack of Self Knowledge

One of the main reasons people feel lost in life and career is a lack of deep self-awareness. Many adults have never fully explored who they are, what they truly value, or how their strengths align with their career choices.

There are many subjects we learn when we are at school, university or through further education. But there is one subject no body has taught you about and that’s the topic of YOU. Without this clarity, it’s easy to feel directionless.

Understanding yourself, your skills, strengths, weaknesses, and values is the foundation for finding meaning and purpose in your work. This process helps to identify new goals and reignite a sense of direction. Self-reflection is essential, but structured guidance makes it even more effective.

How to Regain Clarity when Feeling Lost in Career

feeling lost in life

Feeling lost doesn’t have to be overwhelming.  I have developed a process to help people make sense of career confusion and find direction again. It’s personalised and structured, and it works.

We take actionable steps for you to take to regain clarity and confidence:

  1. Explore what’s changed in your life and why it’s impacting your work
  2. Understand who you are now (your values, strengths and motivations)
  3. Reflect on what meaningful work looks like for you
  4. Discover new directions that fit, not force

These conversations are deep, thoughtful, and often life-changing. They’re not something most people can do alone, and that’s okay.

I’ve worked with many clients who have successfully transitioned into fulfilling careers at different stages of life.

This client came to me in her 40s feeling completely directionless. She’d left a high-pressure job and felt lost.

Through our work, she discovered she was deeply motivated by helping others and retrained in audiology. She retrained and found work that aligned with her strengths and values. She was happy to share this publicly to show the positive outcome of our work together.

FAQs

Q: I am in my 20s and feeling lost. How do you know what career is meant for you?

A: It’s completely normal to feel lost in your 20s. Despite what social media may suggest, most people don’t have it all figured out at this age. You’re still getting to know yourself, your values, interests, strengths, and how you want to contribute to the world.

The idea that there’s one perfect career meant for you can actually add pressure. Instead, think of your 20s as a time to explore, try things out, and learn what feels aligned. The clarity often comes through reflection, not just experience.

Working with a career counsellor can help you understand who you are now and what options suit your personality, preferences, and goals. You will experience 5 career changes and 17 jobs over your life time so you don’t have to choose the “forever path”, just the next right step that helps you grow in the right direction.

Q: Is it too late to change careers in my 30s, 40s or 50s?

A: Absolutely, not. Many of my clients make their most meaningful career changes midlife.

Q: I’m burnout, should I resign?

A: Not necessarily, get some independent perspective from a career counsellor who can highlight the whole picture to you. Reflection and support can make it clear what to do next.
