Millennials in the Workplace- Should I Stay or Should I Go?

There is a significant shift happening in our workplaces today and it involves millennial employees. If you are born between 1980 and 1995, you are amongst many who are unhappy and thinking should I quit my job or should I stay?
Millennials in the workplace have very different ideas about what they want out of their career lives to previous generations before them. It’s no surprise that if their wants and needs aren’t met, changing jobs at 30 could be on their radar.

With the largest ever global generational study ever conducted in 2013, PWC’s NextGEN captures an insight into what the millennial generation expect from today’s workplace. If you are from this millennial generation see if you can relate to any of the studies’ findings below.

  • Millennial employees are unconvinced that excessive work demands are worth the sacrifices to their personal lives. They value their work/life balance and don’t want work taking over their lives.
  • They want more work flexibility and are willing to cut their pay and delay promotions to get it. It’s not about how many hours you put in but rather about completing work tasks.
  • They want to work in teams where there is collaboration and have interesting work assignments globally. They value transparency in terms of their careers, compensation and rewards. A sense of community is very important to them.
  • While previous generations expect job security from their organisation, this generation don’t. They can’t see themselves working for the one organisation for their whole career life and expect to change.
  • The millennial employee wants an employer that will be supportive and appreciative of their work efforts. They expect a work environment that allows them to grow both personally and professionally.

If you agree with most of the above and you are not getting what you need from your current employer, ask yourself three simple questions.

Do I want to stay and negotiate with my current employer?

Do I want to go to another employer within the same industry?

Do I want a complete career change at 30?
Don’t waste another year doing something you currently hate, take action towards happiness and you may surprise yourself where the first step may take you.
