Have you ever had the nagging feeling that your job just doesn’t fit quite right any more. Its like you have outgrown your job. A third of prime age workers in Australia are considering quitting their jobs. Here are seven subtle yet significant signs that might indicate it’s time for your next career chapter.

Seven Signs You’re Bored at Work

1. Your Career Growth Has Plateaued

You’ve mastered your current responsibilities, and while that brought satisfaction initially, now it feels a like a boring routine. Day in day out. When was the last time you genuinely felt challenged or learned something new? Growth isn’t just about climbing the ladder; it’s about expanding your capabilities. If you can do your job on autopilot, it might be time to seek new horizons.

2. Your Values and the Company’s Have Diverged

Remember when your company’s mission made your heart sing? Maybe when you first accepted the position all those years ago. If that alignment has shifted and you find yourself questioning the purpose behind your work, it’s worth paying attention. Values evolve, and sometimes our professional environment no longer reflects what matters most to us.

3. You’re the Go-To Person, for absolutely everything

Being reliable is great, but if you’re constantly solving problems that should be handled by others, you might have outgrown your position. When colleagues and even superiors consistently seek your guidance on matters outside your role, it’s a sign your capabilities exceed your current job description.

4. Your Ideas Are Too Big for Your Role

Do you find yourself thinking about large-scale changes or innovations, only to realise your current position doesn’t give you the authority to implement them? Workplace disengagement follows on a daily and probably hourly basis. When your vision consistently exceeds your realm of influence, it might be time to seek a role that gives your ideas room to flourish.

5. You’re More Excited About Side Projects

If your “real job” feels like it’s getting in the way of passion projects or professional development activities, pay attention. When the work that energises you lives outside your job description, it might be pointing you toward your next career move. No wonder you feel job dissatisfaction.

6. The Future Looks Boring

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in your current role two years from now. Time does not wait for anyone, trust me. Does the thought fill you with excitement or dread? If you can’t envision a compelling future in your current position, your inner wisdom might be telling you something.

7. You’re Experiencing ‘Purpose Fatigue’

Even if you’re good at your job, do you find yourself questioning its meaningfulness? When “What’s the point?” becomes a regular thought, it might indicate you’re ready for work that aligns more closely with your evolving sense of purpose.

You don’t need to be middle aged to experience all of the above. Many young adults who have been working since they were 16 can experience boredom in their 20s.

What to Do Next

If several of these signs resonate with you, don’t rush to update your resume just yet.

Instead:

1. Reflect deeply: What specific aspects of your role no longer fit? What would an ideal next step look like?
2. Explore internal opportunities: Sometimes, the growth you need might be available within your current organisation.
3. Have a candid conversation: Talk with your manager about your feelings and explore possibilities for growth or role evolution.
4. Invest in skill development: Use this time to prepare for your next move by acquiring new skills or certifications.
5. Network strategically: Connect with people in roles you aspire to and learn from their journeys.

Remember, outgrowing a role isn’t a failure, it’s a sign of success. It means you’ve developed, evolved, and are ready for new challenges. The key is recognising these signs and taking proactive steps toward your next opportunity.
Your career is a journey, not a destination. Each role should serve as a stepping stone to your next level of growth and impact. Trust your instincts, honour your growth, and have the courage to take that next step when the time feels right.
